The old “Via della valle del Cosia”

Cos'è
Guided hike amongs monuments, mills and landscapes extending throughout the hills of Brianza to the mountains of Tavernerio along old paths which linked Como with Brianza, the "Larian Triangle" and the territories beyond the river Adda.
Below timetables and excursion places:
At 8.00 am meeting point at San Fereolo Church
• Excursion presentation with photographs and illustrating panels
• Partial visit of San Fereolo church with its frescoes. The dedication to this saint seems to be linked to the Carolingian age. In the past was surprisingly a place of pilgrimage for those faithful from the whole Brianza territory.
At 9.15 am walking through the bridge over Cosia Stream in the places where a flood occurred
• Old courtyards of Tavernerio village
• Visit to the places of the terrible flood occurred in 1951 that caused 16 deaths
• Scenic climb along Guido Frangi staircase
At 9.45 am visit to the Tavernerio destroyed “castrum” (fortress) area
• Visit to St. Martin church and from the staircase you can admire the amazing view of the Brianza territory, Como and the Alps
• It is possible to glimpse Villa Santa Maria gardens (also known as Villa Bossi Lambertenghi or Bossi) where once there was the medieval castle of Tavernerio
• In front of St. Martin church you can clearly see on the stones some 'mill tables', an ancient game of chess
At 10.30 am at ‘Pieterina’
• Participants will walk through a path of Via IV Novembre to reach the 'Pieterina', symbolic place where people from Tavernerio and Solzago used to meet in the past centuries to take public decisions
• Continuing along Via Manzoni until the “Casarga” location used as establishment for social purposes, also a park.
At 11.00 am from S.Bartolomeo Cascina to Camnago Volta (Como)
• Entrance of Via Ravanera at S. Bartolomeo Cascina, already seat of the homonymous church annexed to S. Giuliano Abbey
• Visit to the 17th century San Francesco Church
• Passage in proximity of Villa Campora, where the great scientist Alessandro Volta studied static electricity. The Villa is located not far from the Temple where his mortal remains repose, near the cemetery of Camnago, a place of pilgrimage for scholars and academics
• Visit to the ancient Beretta Mill with its wooden gears. The mill is located in the lower valley of the Valle della Cosia Park, from which you can continue along via Panillani to reach, according to old documents, the small San Martino hospital, managed by the Cathedral Chapter and then by the Humiliati Order
At 12.00 pm go back along the abandoned and old Via del Tram
• climb up the old Via del Tram (that until the 50s it used to connect Como with Lecco through Erba) from which detach many interconnection paths linked to Ponzate and the old village of Casina. Inside its historic nucleus there is a portal with 15th-century terracotta panels, the seventeenth-century oratory and a villa witness to the various historical phases
• Along the 'Tavernerio Coast', the Via del Tram will offer natural glimpses such as the passage through Bottino falls, the view of Valle del Cosia and a great view towards Baradello Tower

Recommended parking areas can be viewed on the website of the Municipality of Tavernerio www.comune.tavernerio.co.it
The itinerary runs for 7 km and it is recommended to wear appropriate shoes and clothing for a winter excursion.
Registration to the walk is free and strongly recommended and can be made at the Tavernerio Library, Via Risorgimento 21, tel. 0039031 428168 or on the official website of the Municipality of Tavernerio, page 'News and Events'.
For logistical reasons the organizers reserves the right to limit the number of participants.
