Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on the homonymous tragedy by William Shakespeare.

Macbeth, the third opera performed at the Teatro Sociale in Como, is one of Verdi's masterpieces, the tenth of the composer's production, with a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave (revised by Andrea Maffei), that, from the first draft (Florence, Teatro della Pergola 1847) at the last one (Paris Théâtre Lyrique 1865 and Teatro alla Scala 1872), the author rearranged many times.
Faithful to the intriguing Shakespearean dramaturgy, it is a succession of musical moments belonging to our historical memory, that inflamed the Italians’ minds at the height of the Risorgimento period: from the cabaletta “Come t'affretta” (Come! Hurry!) of act I to “Una macchia è qui tuttora” (Yet here's a spot) of act IV, written for Lady Macbeth, to the Banco’s aria “Come dal ciel precipita” (O, how the darkness falls from heaven) of act II, to the Witches’ chorus predicting nefarious events, to the chorus “Patria oppressa!” (Down-trodden country), of the last act and act IV, to the Macduff’s aria “Ah, la mano paterna” (Ah, the paternal hand), to “Pietà, rispetto, amore” (Compassion, honour, love), turned into “Pietà, rispetto, onore” (Compassion, respect, honour) (edition 1865), which is the final aria of Macbeth.

In the current 2019/20-night season, “Per tutta colpa della luna” (it's all moon's fault), in Macbeth the moon reappears in different echoes and suggestions, especially in the frequent nocturnal atmospheres, present in the dramaturgy and in the score.

Silvia Dalla Benedetta will make her debut as Lady Macbeth, flanked by: Angelo Veccia, who is the main character, Alexey Birkus as Banco, Katarzyna Medlarska as the Lady of Lady Macbeth, Giuseppe Distefano as Macduff, Alessandro Fantoni as Malcolm, Alberto Comes as a Doctor / a Servant of Macbeth / Assassin. An important cast conducted by Gianluigi Gelmetti.
The direction was entrusted to Elena Barbalich (assistant director Costanza Degani), while the scenes and costumes was entrusted to Tommaso Lagattolla (assistant to the scenes and costumes Alessio Rosati) the lighting to Giuseppe Ruggiero and the choreography to Danilo Rubeca.

It is a co-production of OperaLombardia Theaters with Pomeriggi Musicali Orchestra and OperaLombardia Choir conducted by Diego Maccagnola.
